Quadriceps-Sparing Total Knee Replacement

Knee replacement is an option for many patients with severe knee arthritis. Although other treatment options are available, for some knee replacement is the best treatment option.

Quadriceps-Sparing Total Knee Replacement

An alternative to traditional total knee replacement is the quadriceps-sparing total knee replacement approach. This approach uses the same knee replacement implants used in traditional replacement but does so through a shorter incision. This short incision avoids or minimizes cutting the quadriceps muscle. The quadriceps muscle is among the most important muscles in the knee and keeping it intact allows for a much quicker recovery time and less rehabilitation after surgery. This approach also uses a much smaller incision, typically 4–5" in length compared to 8–12" with traditional knee replacement. The shorter incision means less pain and less scarring.

Benefits

  • Quicker recovery
  • Smaller incision
  • Decreased pain after surgery
  • Less blood loss
  • Shorter hospital stay

Your Surgeon

This surgical approach can not be performed by all orthopedic surgeons. In fact, Dr. Rishi Gupta and Dr. Christopher Estes here at the Aspire Orthopedic Instituteare some of the only surgeons trained in this approach in the state of Oregon. The quad-sparing approach is appropriate for many patients but not all. To find out if the quad-sparing approach is an option for you, please call 503-261-6961.
