Adventist Health Implementing Computerized Physician/Provider Order Entry (CPOE)

October 3, 2011

Adventist Health is in the process of implementing Computerized Physician/Provider Order Entry (CPOE). This new technology replaces handwritten physician and medication orders with clear, precise, typed orders, leading to a significantly lower medical error rate and improved patient care.

With the launch of this new system, AH ranks in the top 10 percent of the nation’s hospitals for having a fully-integrated electronic medical records system. Patient advantages include:

  • Significant reduction in medical errors
  • Patients receive better, faster care
  • Easier to understand discharge instructions and plans

The positive impact of this new process on patient safety cannot be overstated. When physicians enter orders directly into the system, there’s no chance of someone misinterpreting a physician’s handwriting or orders. And, specialized warnings alert the physician to any potential negative interactions. Our nurses, physicians and staff are pleased to integrate this new technology because of our commitment to provide exceptional patient care.

Deborah Pokorny, director of Computer Information Systems states that AMC has spent the past two years creating electronic ordersets for CPOE that incorporates evidence-based best practice and decision support at the time of order entry. The process ensures that the patient is receiving quality, safe and appropriate care based on the latest research available. CPOE provides AMC with new opportunities for improving efficiencies and processes. “Adventist Health is incorporating CPOE because is the right thing to do for our patients,” says Pokorny.
