Did you know that losing an hour of sleep might be detrimental for your health?
It’s that time of year again, when we will be moving our clocks forward and adjusting our bodies to daylight savings time. The time change is one that we cannot avoid. However, there are ways to keep you from falling victim to the terrible side effects of losing sleep.
“Getting the proper amount of sleep can serve as a powerful armor against illness,” states Dr. Kamaljit, Atwal, a sleep medicine specialist at Adventist Medical Center. “Sleep helps eliminate stress and essentially recharges the body.”
Research printed in the American Journal of Cardiology shows that if you are already sleep deprived, the switch to daylight saving time this weekend could increase your risk for accidents and heart attacks. That's because sleep loss impairs cognition and also activates the part of your nervous system that deals with stress, increasing blood pressure and inflammation. Here are some tips Dr. Atwal suggests you may want to follow this weekend.
- Shift your sleep schedule – go to bed earlier.
- Don't use alcohol to induce sleep.
- Drink plenty of water and eat wholesome, high-fiber foods.
- Get seven to eight hours of sleep every night on a consistent schedule, and get plenty of exercise.
